What's need for a documentry film?

Last week blog was about my proposal experience for my college English class but also last week was about everyone in my class presenting there proposal. Now we are at the point where we have made our decisions on who's proposals we would to work with. We each made our own individual choices from our first to fifth place choice. Now since that part has been finished; we have now have to think what is need in a documentary film since we are going to make a documentary film based on the proposal that we are assigned in. Therefore, our English teacher put a documentary film on so we can think on what is need in one.
When I was watching the film (only a portion of it) I thought about what was needed in a documentary film. These are what I thought is need; which are :
  1. Have an idea on what to make the film on. ( Have a topic and a purpose )
  2. Do further research on topic chosen
  3. Do interviews/ Get peoples perspectives on the topic
  4. Have visual scenes of the topic/ Have visual evidence
  5. Make audience understand and feel the film
  6. Make sure the message is sent
I look forward on knowing whether my proposal was chosen but if not, I still look forward on my classmates proposals and doing a documentary film with them. This would be a project I have not done yet and that's the reason why I look forward to it. Overall, those are the things in which I think is need in a documentary film.

Proposal Experience

This week we are presenting our proposal which we had to write for my English college class. For my proposal I wrote about the Memorial Coliseum. In the beginning, I had no idea what I was going to write about, I was trying to figure out something that  my classmates would like to research further and also something that I would be interested in looking into. I had an idea of writing about the Kentucky Theater at first but I didn’t find it very interesting, later the Memorial Coliseum came easier to my mind to write about and persuade others through my proposal. I did not know much about the Kentucky Theater and could not figure out on reasons why it was worth looking into. Writing the proposal for me at first was a little difficult but came easy afterwards. One problem I had was finding sources that had information on the Memorial Coliseum and did not want to use unreliable websites such as Wikipedia. Despite the lack of sources, I found enough information that helped me construct my proposal. After we had written our proposal, we did two activities in class which I enjoy, one was when we had an in class peer review on our proposal and the other one was practicing presenting our proposal in front of our classmates. In the end, my overall experience of writing the proposal was an unusual experience for me because I had to think about what others would like to do and also if it would be a good project for a documentary film. It was an experience which I had to put more thought into than I expected and hopefully, my proposal does get chosen. I look forward in finding out more about the Memorial Coliseum and hope to have certain questions answered.

Rupp Arena

In my college English class we had this proposal to write about a space/organization near Lexington and I have chosen the Memorial Coliseum. Therefore, in this blog I'm writing about the Rupp Arena because it relates towards my proposal. The photo below shows the news when UK (University of Kentucky) men's basketball team was being moved to the Rupp Arena. It comes from the arena information section under history in the website http://www.rupparena.com/.
site_history_031.jpg
The Rupp Arena goes back in 1971, a time where the Tourism Commission came up with an idea to build the Rupp Arena as the first complex to have public and private funds combined together. Later in June 21, 1974, the Rupp Arena went under construction. Central Kentucky never had in history, a complete sports, entertainment and convention facility until the Rupp Arena was begin built. It was known in a newspaper editorial as “Downtown Dream Come True”. The Rupp Arena finally had its Grand Opening on October 7-10 in 1976 with 23,000 seats. It became known as the heart of downtown Lexington and as a one of the widely known entertainment venues in the country.
The reason why the Rupp Arena relates to my proposal is because the Memorial Coliseum was the home of the UK men’s basketball team until the Rupp Arena opened. And want to know the background history of it to have an understanding on exactly why the UK men’s basketball team left the Coliseum to go to the Arena? I want to find out what makes this place more special than the historic site; the Memorial Coliseum. While reading the history behind the arena, a few questions came in mind related towards my proposal. Which are:
  1.    How can we make the Memorial Coliseum become like the Rupp Arena to attract it more to the public?
  2. Why has UK allowed their men’s basketball team to leave the Memorial Coliseum?
  3. Will making more seats available in the Memorial Coliseum increase its popularity by having more people available to come to games?

These questions has made me want to look more forward into further research to increase the interest in my proposal.

Students Helping Honduras Organization

Our Story

The photo above comes from Our Story Section in the website ceciskids.org. I came across it when looking for more detailed information on SHH (Students Helping Honduras), which I became interested when I first encountered it in the student involvement fair in the beginning of the school year. Since I’m from Honduras, I was automatically interested in joining SHH. It does not tell who exactly wrote that section of the website but, looking through it, it seems it was written by SHH.

SHH is a non-profit organization which is spread throughout in universities and high schools in the US trying to help Honduras. The page talks about how SHH began and what SHH is working on in Honduras. This organization began with Shin Fujiyama (CEO of SHH and a CNN hero) being a college student at the time, who visited Honduras and realized people needed help. Starting from scratch, raising money through different fundraisers, and with thousands of volunteers, SHH has been able to build schools, orphanages, and  a village called Villa Soleada.

The website also gives out facts on the rankings and percentage of the poverty of Honduras. Also the types of gangs in which children join there. It’s a country being ranked in second place of poverty in the western hemisphere. It also talks about their values which they use on making their organization work, which are: local empowerment, jobs (not handouts), sweat equity, and sustainability.

While analyzing the page and understanding more of the organization, a few questions came in mind which has made me curious about SHH.

Which are:

1. How did Shin Fujiyama first encountered with helping Honduras and why Honduras?

2. How will these schools & homes be protected from the violence in Honduras?

3. Does SHH plan to expand their organization in Honduras universities and wealthy private schools, instead of US universities and high schools.

4. Why Villa Soleada? And the meaning behind its name?

5. How does the Honduras government feel about organizations, like SHH, reaching out on helping the country?

I will take in consideration of these questions.
